Education, Europe and transformation as core priorities

Study, teach, and research in the border region: the lush green campus of Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) is located right on the German-Danish border in northern Schleswig-Holstein.

Major societal issues shaping the future of education, Europe, and societal transformation form the core of research, teaching, and academic training at EUF. What specialized knowledge and skills do today’s educators need to effectively strengthen democracy and foster learning in their professional practice? How can the European and global crises of institutions and economic systems, and the growing loss of social cohesion, be analyzed? What processes of societal change are underway, and how can they be guided and supported?

International, research-oriented, closely connected to practice—this is the orientation of research and teaching at EUF.

Practice- and research-based studies with an international focus

From primary schools to vocational schools: at Europa-Universität Flensburg, students can train for a teaching career in any of the existing types of schools. Intensive practical phases and the opportunity to spend semesters abroad offer early and deep insights into the profession. Thanks to the strong focus on educational science, students also acquire sound subject-specific knowledge.

Studies and teaching with a strong European dimension: students at EUF are encouraged to learn multiple languages and to go abroad, for which they receive targeted support. Europa-Universität Flensburg is networked throughout Europe. In addition to teacher education programs, students also find here a range of English and multilingual degree programs in economics, the humanities, the societal, social, and natural sciences, and technology. All of them aim to prepare graduates for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

    Interdisciplinary, solution-oriented research

Educational research, European studies, transformation and sustainability: EUF's core research areas address important issues arising from current social challenges. Each of these areas brings together the expertise of various disciplines within education, the social sciences, engineering and the humanities. These core areas are institutionally embedded into the university's structure via dedicated research centers.

The Education area integrates the study of extracurricular socialization process into research on schools and education through childhood and youth studies.

The Europe area brings together different perspectives and methods from the social sciences and humanities to investigate the multi-layered processes of European (dis)integration.

The Transformation/Sustainability area explores interdisciplinary relationships in the natural, technical, and social sciences and the humanities.

Studying across Europe, connecting across borders

At Europa-Universität Flensburg, this is not only possible—it is intensely supported and encouraged. The university offers international semester schedules, as well as English and multilingual degree programs. Teacher education students are particularly encouraged to go abroad during their studies; other degree courses offer trinational degrees and explicitly include study or internship stays abroad.

Virtual mobility should be facilitated in the future, for example by assigning credits for participation in digital formats offered by partner universities. EUF maintains a strong international network. It collaborates with eight other universities across Europe in the EMERGE project and with the Danish Syddansk Universities. Interconnecting students and lecturers across Europe and beyond, as well as strengthening exchange—these are always in focus.
