The Helmut Schmidt University/University of the German Armed Forces – The place of science.

We qualify our students through academic education for military and civilian management positions. For almost 50 years, we have been covering the holder's need for experts and specialists. On the basis of excellent basic research and forward-looking applied research, we are the pacemaker for the the German Armed Forces – the Bundeswehr. Involving the idea of lifelong learning, we develop high quality continuing education programs for the public sector. In networking with academic institutions in Germany and abroad, the university established itself as an internationally oriented science partner.

The university provides its military and civilian students with technical expertise and a science-based ability to criticize and judge. Its degrees are equivalent to those of the civil universities, and thus it makes a significant contribution to the attractiveness of the Bundeswehr as an employer.

Studies at a Bundeswehr university - There are nonetheless a couple of features.

One trimester lasts 12 weeks; the academic year is split into three trimesters followed by a three-month break. For all bachelor’s and master’s programmes, the standard duration of study is seven and five trimesters. Together, this equals a period of four years.

All our academic courses are intensive study programmes. This means that up to 75 ECTS credit points can be obtained per academic year; students at public universities can only obtain up to 60 credit points.

Students live on campus. They live close to the academic and research buildings, libraries, a cafeteria, sports facilities, medical practitioners, dentists and a Protestant/ a Catholic community. An integral part of the ambitious study concept is studying in small groups. It means: most classes are conducted in groups of up to 25 students. High standards regarding personnel and equipment are mandatory to ensure the trimester system and to enable the students to complete their studies.
